Statistical Study of the Star Formation Efficiency in Bars: Is Star Formation Suppressed in Gas-rich Bars?

چکیده
Abstract The dependence of the star formation efficiency (SFE) on galactic structures—especially whether SFE in bar region is lower than those other regions—has recently been debated. We report SFEs 18 nearby gas-rich massive star-forming barred galaxies with large apparent major axes (≧75″). statistically measure by distinguishing center, end, and regions for first time. molecular gas surface density derived from archival CO(1–0) and/or CO(2–1) data assuming a constant CO-to-H 2 conversion factor ( α CO ), rate linear combination far-UV mid-IR intensities. angular resolution 15″, which corresponds to 0.3–1.8 kpc. find that ratio disk was systematically unity (typically 0.6–0.8), means suppressed. Our results are inconsistent similar recent statistical studies, have reported tends be independent structures. This inconsistency can attributed differences definitions region, spatial resolutions, , sample galaxies. Furthermore, we negative correlation between velocity width spectrum, consistent idea dynamical effects—such as strong shocks, shears, fast cloud–cloud collisions caused noncircular motion bar—result low SFE.

Molecular gas and star formation in BIMA SONG bars
Using a sample of 7 barred spirals from the BIMA Survey of Nearby Galaxies (SONG), we compare the molecular gas distribution in the bar, to recent massive star formation activity. In all 7 galaxies, Hα is offset azimuthally from the CO on the downstream side. The maximum offset, at the bar ends, ranges from 170-570 pc, with an average of 320±120 pc. We discuss whether the observed offsets are c...
متن کاملEnhanced Star Formation - the Importance of Bars in Spiral Galaxies
We have found that amongst an IR-luminous subset of nearby spiral galaxies, nearly all of the systems with IRAS colours and luminosities indicative of enhanced star formation are barred. Radio continuum and IR-spectroscopic results support the hypothesis that this emission originates within the central 2kpc; possibly in a circumnuclear ring. We also find that outer rings are over-represented am...
متن کاملEstimating the Ages of Bars: Implications for the Bar-AGN-Star Formation Connection
In an effort to elevate to higher grounds our understanding on the impact of the formation and evolution of bars in the formation and evolution of galaxies, we have developed a diagnostic tool to distinguish between recently formed and evolved bars. Our method was applied in the study of a sample of 14 galaxies and revealed that, apparently, AGN activity tends to appear in galaxies which have y...
متن کاملStar formation efficiency in galaxy clusters
Context. The luminous material in clusters of galaxies exists in two forms: the visible galaxies and the X-ray emitting intra-cluster medium. The hot intra-cluster gas is the major observed baryonic component of clusters, about six times more massive than the stellar component. The mass contained within visible galaxies is approximately 3% of the dynamical mass. Aims. Our aim was to analyze bot...
متن کاملStar formation in metal-poor gas clouds
Observations of molecular clouds in metal-poor environments typically find that they have much higher star formation rates than one would expect based on their observed CO luminosities and the molecular gas masses that are inferred from them. This finding can be understood if one assumes that the conversion factor between CO luminosity and H2 mass is much larger in these low-metallicity systems...
